While Aurora Serverless v1 had limitations (waiting for transactions to complete before scaling), v2 addresses these with rapid scaling capabilities. However, the true cost-efficiency superpower comes from its ability to completely shut down when not in use.

The scaling to zero does come with a tradeoff: cold starts can take up to one minute. However, for non-production environments or systems where occasional startup delay is acceptable, this is a reasonable compromise for the cost benefits.
